A cover letter that isn't the résumé in paragraphs: their problem, your one best proof you can solve it, and why this company over the other tabs.

Your document

Dear Ms. Fernandes, I'm applying for the Senior Frontend Engineer role. Your engineering blog's posts on shipping accessible components at scale describe exactly the kind of frontend culture I want to build in. At Meridian I led the rebuild of a design system used by six product teams: bundle size fell 40%, and the audit that previously found 200+ accessibility issues found nine. The posting emphasises component performance and mentoring — both are the core of what I've done for the past three years, and what I'd bring from week one. I'd welcome the chance to talk about what the first six months in this role should deliver. Thank you for considering my application. Sincerely, Arjun Mehta

How to use it well

  • One proof, told properly, beats five claims listed — the résumé already carries the list; the letter's job is depth on the best item.
  • The "why them" sentence must fail the swap test: if another company's name fits it unchanged, rewrite it.
  • Keep it under a page and cut every sentence that describes you without evidence ("I am a passionate team player") — recruiters report these as skim-skips.
