Your prompt
Write my weekly status update for my engineering manager. Use exactly three sections: Done (what shipped or finished, with impact in one clause), Blocked (each blocker with the specific ask that would unblock it and who I need it from), and Next (top priorities for next week, max three).
Keep it under 150 words. No pleasantries, no "great progress this week" framing — just the facts, in the first person. If my notes mention something half-done, put it in Next, not Done.
My raw notes:
shipped invoice pdf export monday. auth refactor half done, waiting on secops review since tues — pinged twice. onboarding doc draft w/ maya. next: finish refactor, start rate limiting.
Model-agnostic — works in Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or any AI chat.
Why this prompt works
- →Done/Blocked/Next is the format managers scan for; giving it as a fixed contract means no section gets forgotten when the week was messy.
- →Requiring an ask-plus-person on every blocker converts complaints into unblockable requests — the difference between a status report and a to-do list for your manager.
- →The half-done rule keeps Done honest, which is what makes the update trustworthy week after week.
